IT’S A WRAP FOR ALPHA FILM FESTIVAL 2023! Here’s all you need to know.

--

Since its inception, the MILC Metaverse has reached key milestones in the platform’s development, the ground-breaking Alpha Film Festival is one of those defining moments.

The months of brainstorming, planning, programming and implementation has finally paid off with the completion of the inaugural Alpha Film Festival, launched by The Film Verdict and the MILC Platform. The first-generation virtual film festival was hosted exclusively in the MILC Metaverse from 3rd-7th March, designed to entertain, distribute quality content, and to showcase what a metaverse festival can be.

Program Overview

Curated by The Film Verdict writer and short-film expert Ben Nicholson, The festival programme consisted of 30 cutting-edge short films from around the world, combined with informative live panel discussions with 15 inspirational speakers. The whole programme was moulded around the festival’s theme “The Future”.

  • The Official Selection: Main programme of 12 short-films available to stream throughout the festival, and voted on by the community, rather than a traditional panel. The winning film Zombies, directed by Baloji, was the recipient of the 1st Alpha Film Festival Audience Award.
  • Live Panel Discussions: 3 evenings of live panel discussions with pioneers in the film3 movement, filmmakers and artists utilizing AI, as well as creators challenging the boundaries between film and gaming.
  • Live Film Screenings: Each of the three live programmes included a collection of films which complemented the panels, mirroring the themes spanning visions of the future, AI and gaming.

The Alpha Film Festival can already be claimed a huge success. It achieved what it was designed to do, by fulfilling one of the main use cases for users, the distribution of quality content.

Participation Statistics

The entry to the Metaverse film festival was available for ticket holders only. However, it was designed to feel inclusive and non-traditional. Being an exploratory community experience, the tickets were priced low at 5 USD. It was created to be accessible to everyone, allowing attendees to experience how the Metaverse and web3 technologies can essentially revolutionize the film industry.

The traffic numbers on the MILC Metaverse over the duration of the festival surpassed expectations, with over 20K side requests, 25% from Germany, 19% from USA and 16% from UK.

Key statistics:

  • Number of entries to the Metaverse Art Gallery to participate in the festival: 296
  • Streamed video assets: ~ 9K
  • AFF Tickets sold: ~ 200

Given it was the first film festival of its kind, and with a modest publicity campaign the results were extremely encouraging.

The community is at the heart of AFFs success, as community participation was built into the DNA of the festival, designed to be open-to-all and non-traditional.

Community participation was given importance at every stage of the festival. The AFF official poster was selected through a poster-making competition for the community, from a total of 50 amazing entries received. The Audience Award was also designed with the community in mind, breaking the tradition of voting via an elected panel of experts.

Future-Outlook

The intention of AFF 2023 was to start small and gain from experiences. It wasn’t a money-making venture but a learning venture. AFF gained the attention of traditional media companies and successfully presented the huget potential of the Metaverse, whilst building on the general public’s interest in the arts in the virtual world.

The Founder and CEO of MILC Platform, Hendrik Hey, says:

“The AFF was born, and it will be the most relevant film festival on Web3. Who knows us, knows that we never start something without continuously expanding it with diligence and passion. It is one of our greatest strengths”.

“The Alpha Film Festival is a great exhibit for an event with great quality. Together with industry partners and the audience, we want to make this brand big and relevant. It’s also meant to be inclusive, and a space for established festivals to expand into. The major advantage is that suddenly a lot more people can participate!”

The MILC Platform would like to express its gratitude to The Film Verdict, AFF’s Artistic Director Ben Nicholson for curating the programme, the filmmakers, the speakers, and the audience, all of whom contributed towards the success of the first ever AFF. Follow AFF on Twitter.
